“Jazz is Creativity”

At the early eighties we liked to headline the annual jazz course with a name, maybe to attract the music follower’s attention in any of the essential jazz ´s elements, and simultaneously, what could be the common subject of the programme.

As a reminder of those historic concerts with mythic musicians of jazz history, who performed them, let us to come back now with the creativity. If the previous course, the last 25º Jazz festival, one of its attributes, was the absence surely searched by the musicians of the acoustic piano, pursuing to get more freedom, now in fact within every group, piano is the principal instrument and besides trusting with important soloists like
Jamie Saft, Dave Burrell, Uri Cane. The best point is that we have a new programme that, Pablo Sanz, jazz critic for the daily El Mundo recently referred as, “Jazz flowers in Spring in the San Juan”, I mean in a few days, and surely it should be of interest for the music lovers and furthermore with the participation, for the first time in Madrid, of one of the most demanded jazzman since anytime, the legendary saxophonist Yusef Lateef.

This time, surely, the musical beauty that we try to achieve is looking for the harmony and the melody, with the recreation made by those musicians of songs written by classical and popular composers and with their own compositions, ever with the importance of their improvisation. Obviously, the freedom in jazz continues, but we want to tell you too, that the names that we hastily published are going to be postponed for a farther future due to the already known financial conditions and the full musician’s agenda.

Backing in past time, with regard to the headlines, I remember how the learned Jose Ramón Rubio critic for the daily El Pais, said with a lot of humour in a previous of the time “jazz is freedom and without risk”, and in this way could be known “jazz is equality” or “jazz is fraternity”, from retoric to the important the essential point is the content. This time, the creativity, that is synonymous of jazz.

In this course have performed names as Egberto Gismonti, Randy Weston, Jackie McLean, Bebo Valdés, Abdullah Ibrahim, Dave Douglas, Geri Allen, Freddie Hubbard, Dhafer Youseff, Don Byron, Chano Dominguez and Miguel Angel Chastang, among others, no need of words. Now enjoy of this new programme with other important musicians to add to this large history, and that sure are going to keep impressed in our memory with eternal sounds.

Special thanks to private enterprises that for a long time have sponsored us,
El Corte Inglés and Fundación Unicaja for their essential collaboration, understanding at the same time that we’d need something else. Since the Official Institutions we begin to notice their support because is evident that a base culture is a necessary complement to the official one.

The mythic history of the San Juan stands up, because of the disinterested teamwork, the illusion and enthusiasm of the managers, together with the firm labour of amateurs and media. We have to resist because in this society the utopia is an essential ideal to be continued and keep, and the Johnny, now continues being one independent place, necessary to the university and to Madrid, and we have to keep and make better.

The San Juan Evangelista*, in residential, educational and specially in musical domain, all that had been said, today is still too.

* Colegio Mayor Universitario San Juan Evangelista = San Juan Evangelista = San Juan = El Johnny
