This year, we are celebrating the 40º anniversary of the foundation of this Club, a non-profit association which started being called “Club de Música San Juan Evangelista” although the word Jazz was added soon later, turning into the denomination of “Club de Música y Jazz”. We wanted to emphasize the value that the fan residents of this Madrilenian residence gave to this music. Since its beginning, year 1970, we started the musical events with a concert of the most universal Spanish jazzman, Tete Montoliu; jazz concerts even during the dictatorship time in which we have been constantly celebrating during these past 40 years.

Regarding the live jazz music, the purpose we have been following in these past festivals it has been that the scheduled concerts had a thread and, this year, coinciding with the Spanish Presidency of the European Union, we have decided to dedicate this 18º Ciclo de Jazz es Primavera to Eurojazzz, which it will take place between February and March.

During this large career, it is not the first time the European jazzmen visit us. We have had a relevant presence of bands of every jazz style from all across Europe, from the traditional styles to the avant-garde and the electronic sounds. We could recount a large list of artists such as Maria João, Stéphane Grappelli, Martial Solal, Michel Petrucciani, Louis Sclavis, Erik Truffaz, Enrico Rava, Paolo Fresu, E.S.T. (Esbjörn Svensson Trio), Atomic, Bugge Wesseltoft, Jan Garbarek, Joachim Kühn, Peter Brötzmann, Tomasz Stanko, John McLaughlin, Dave Holland, Vienna Art Orchestra and the most of the Spanish jazzmen like Tete Montoliu, Pedro Iturralde, Vlady Bas, Jorge Pardo, Carles Benavent, Javier Colina, Iñaki Salvador, Baldo Martínez, Abe Rábade, Chano Domínguez, Miguel Ángel Chastang, Perico Sambeat and many others.

At the time of making up this program, what we have looked for, besides its European origin, is the important quality of the musicians who will visit us and their projects, their diverse music, creative spirit and their originality from the youngest to the oldest performers. We will count on the absolute novelty of Djabe, the best Hungarian band, the return to Spain of the “European Jazz Ensemble”, on its 34º Tour formed by excellent European musicians, the jewels of the Trios of Stefano Bollani (Italy), Nils Wogram (Germany), Bobo Stenson (Sweden) and Enrico Pieranuzi (Italy). We are also very excited in having the new English vocal jazz star, Jose James, Carlos “Sir Charles” Glez, representing the Spanish Jazz, and the English surprise of the innovator band of Portico Quartet.

We are sure that it is a festival for the memory, with music based on the folklore of every country, the free-jazz, the classical European music and the roots of jazz, everything filled of beauty, lyricism and freshness in this new presentation of European Jazz. We have made this possible with low economic ways. Our budget is this year even more shrunk because of the withdrawal of one of our official sponsors that have forced us to leave out of this festival the French jazz, one of the homelands of jazz in Europe, as it is known.

In this uncertainty future, the support of the aficionados and the media is more needed than ever. We would also like to thank one more time the important collaborations for this festival of El Corte Inglés, and its help for the last 28 years as well, along with the Embassies of Hungary and Sweden and the Spanish Presidency.

Who could think in turning 40 years of jazz, flamenco and the rest of the world music at the Johnny, at San Juan Evangelista? All of this success has been promoted by its Club de Música y Jazz and, however, we are still on the road.

As the Opera Director of the Teatro Español, Gérard Portier, says “In those crisis times when Europe only could be saved by creative ideas, especially in a cultural level”, we hope that our Jazz es Primavera project will be among them, taking part of the “Festival Eurojazz 2010” of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union.
